Gymnázium Karla Čapka has its roots in 1953, when a general secondary school was established in Dobříš, which was at the time a district town. It is a state school under the administration of the Central Bohemian Region. Since 1995, the school has carried the honorary name of Karel Čapek — the renowned Czech writer and playwright — as a tribute to his legacy and humanist values.

The school offers two study programmes: a four-year programme for students finishing compulsory education, and an eight-year programme for students from the fifth grade of primary school. In the final two years of study, students can choose from a variety of seminars, allowing them to focus on subjects relevant to their intended university path or personal interests. In the 2025/26 school year, the gymnasium is attended by 343 students in total — 225 enrolled in the eight-year programme and 118 in the four-year programme.
Lessons take place in standard classrooms, specialist rooms, and laboratories. Computer rooms are equipped with internet access and are available to students in the afternoons outside of scheduled lessons. The school also has a 3D printer available to students throughout the day, opening up new opportunities for personal development in technology and engineering.
Beyond academics, the school has a vibrant community life. Students participate in international exchange programmes — for example, hosting guests from Madeira, Portugal, and acting as guides for them in Prague and across Central Bohemia. The school regularly organises a series of travel lectures and also holds art competitions, such as a recent one marking the centenary of Karel Čapek's coining of the word "robot" in his play R.U.R.
